Federer Survives Roddick

07.05.09 | Comment?

Wow. I missed last year’s Wimbledon final as I was visiting family, but… wow! Roddick and Federer duked it out for over four hours, each one basically daring the other to blink first. Roddick played a few loose points that cost him the second-set tiebreak, and of course he lost his last service game, but other than that they were toe-to-toe.

I liked how commentator John McEnroe never talked about the winner “wanting it more”. Both of these guys put in the hard work and preparation that leads to success. Each player knew that he had what it took to win. A couple of points here or there and Roddick would be hoisting the trophy.

I did think that Roddick showed signs of wearing down late in the fifth set, when he couldn’t get to the shots he’d been retreiving through the first four sets, and in the end it was fatigue that cost him. Federer never really put a dent in Roddick’s serve; a few tired miscues by the American are what determined the outcome.

Still, a great match, and both guys have good reason to feel proud.

Update: This photograph really sums it up.
