The Inequality Myth

03.10.08 | Comment?

The idea that poor Americans are getting poorer is pretty thoroughly debunked by this Wall Street Journal article, backed up by statistical evidence. The main points: income per household has been stagnant, but the number of people per household has declined, meaning that each person is earning more; and that about one in eight Americans has emigrated here in the last quarter century, most of them poor, though the percentage of the poor has not changed, meaning other people have been moving out of poverty.

It’s absolutely true that there is still poverty in America, even desperate poverty, but it’s also true that there is work to be found for everyone except those in the most difficult circumstances.
