Dear Spineless Bastards

02.08.08 | Comment?

The other day I wrote about the Berkeley City Council, which was in the process of doing everything in their collective power to encourage Marine recruiters to leave town. I thought their actions were stupid and insulting, but hey, we have freedom of speech in this country and I suppose I can respect them for sticking to their principles.

Well, guess what: faced with the loss of funds from the federal government, Berkeley has caved in. I think my favorite quote was from Councilman (sic?) Laurie Capitelli, who said, “Subtly stated in the resolution is perhaps an impugning of the soldiers fighting for us in Iraq and other places. And that was never the intention…” Sorry, but didn’t the letter say the Marines were “uninvited and unwelcome intruders”?

Another great quote, from Code Pink member Xanne Joi (no, I didn’t make that name up): “To me, I thought free speech meant you get to say what you want without recrimination.” So if Xanne and her compatriots say something I disagree with, she thinks it’s wrong of me to say, “I think you’re full of crap.” No recriminations? Ask the Dixie Chicks how that worked out.

I guess after reading about battles like Bellau Wood and Iwo Jima I shouldn’t be surprised that the Marines had the bigger balls.
