Breaking Down the Great Escape

02.08.08 | Comment?

The Great Escape – the spectacular 32-yard Eli Manning to David Tyree pass in the last minute of the Superbowl – was, without a doubt, the play of the game. Now Michael David Smith of Football Outsiders breaks down the play with some great pictures.

This is the first anaylysis I’ve seen that credits referee Mike Carey for swallowing his whistle. If you’ve seen the replay, you’ll see that when Richard Seymour grabs Manning’s jersey, Carey takes several steps forward, ready to blow the play dead. But he didn’t, Manning got away, and the rest is history.
